they are so very very big and there are great open places and ponds and fountains and great chances for fun only to tell the truth the little French boys dont look as manly as American boys do and I should like to show off my nephews here—  But you never saw any thing so fine and handsome as some of the soldiers or rather the mounted policemen - that is policemen on horseback—  They have them to stand by the Opera house and other great places - and the horses are trained to stand stock still in one place for hours with a big man on their backs  The men wear brass helmets on their heads with a long black horse tail hanging from the top of it down their backs - and if it rains or is night this [[they]] wear big black cloaks and looks so fierce and warlike that I am sure any one who made a row would be afraid of them—  
They are always afraid here that the people are going to make a disturbance and are always ready for it——  

They have a funny way here of sitting out on the pavements on chairs even in cold weather They have no streets at home like they have here but wouldnt you think it funny if you went to town one day and saw the pavements in broad street all full of
