the make the lines of gas jets follow the principal lines of great buildings and churches and you can imagine what a noble effect this has— St. Sulpice has two enormous hight [[height]] round towers like this: [[sketch-right]] The top of each tower was surrounded by two rings of light one line of light across the middle to join them - the effect was actually sublime— The Madeleine which stands at the end of the rue Royale and is in the shape of a Grecian temple had simply one line of light like this [[sketch]] shining out of darkness— Did you [[right side]] and cap—, in an arbor carrying the child nestled up in the neck - you cant see its face - she looks out over its little shoulder - with an expression of maternal rapture and tenderness I never saw equalled - any where - Her face is small and not exactly pretty. There is no light and shade - it is all light that is reflected light— She has come to the end of the little grape arbor - and bright sunshine from the path in front of her - (one cant see it) strikes up all around her— The whole picture is in a flat golden greenish tone which helps to give it its naivèté—
