flame-colored lanterns - big boats floating along the dark water  covered mast-high with lanterns and almost trailing them in the water - all the big stone quay's hung with them, and the groups of trees which every little while beautify the river—  
The huge mysterious buildings by the river outlined with gas-lights—   All the bridges different graceful designs of light—   And always the big trees - domes - black arches & black water full of flaming wobbly reflections  
We walked up and down gasping - and did'nt get home until 12.30—  No city

but Paris could get up a fête like this - no matter what it spent - on account of its construction - the river - the architecture - the huge Place and trees, and gardens, all splendidly regal and vast—  The R.F. had better be thankful it had kings once - for a city never would be splendidly beautiful without their extravagance & monopoly—  
Poor Constance could'nt go of course   We were lamenting over this all the evening but she always laughs and is patient.
