They have had people to dinner both evenings and tonight we are going to a dinner party. The first night Tuesday it was two men only - one of them Mr Robertson Smith a scottish man  the Librarian of the great library and who contains the whole British Encyclopedia—  And the other a Mr Middleton of Middleton  Professor and Lecturer on Fine Arts—  They are about the two most learned men in the University and awful queer - they both look middle aged but are not - Mr R.S is like a little scotch terrier

with every hair of him a telephone wire into ware houses full [[of]] facts - you only have to touch the button and it comes pouring out - in a monotonous voice, nothing about him moving but his lower jaw - Mr Middleton is long, marrow, gentle, bald headed, and has much more temperament - and no less tarnin—
