Sunday

This evening in the smoking room I noticed a man who was a double of Kipling. At the time I was trying to warm my whole body in front of miniature open fireplace. Five other men were gathered about. We all got talking Elections (American and English) Talk drifted to South Africa, then surgery. Our Kipling turned out to be a surgeon named Gray [[?]] of U.S.A He has been spending sometime on this side. Very well informed man. Entertained us all with clever stories. I took occasion then to ask him about London doctors. He gave me the address of what he considered the finest surgeon and adviser in London. A Mr. Knox Shaw, Surgeon of a large Hospital on G & Ormond St., London. He spent six weeks [striketrough] at [strikethrough] witnessing this man's work, and prefers him to any of them. Perhaps doctor has heard of him. 

This is a funny hotel. In the morning they bring you a can of hot water (hot or cold) to wash in. Strange to say I feel very much at home in this hotel, and city. Never knew the English ate so much until this noon when an elderly lady at my
