Dear Parents -

Your letter from Seattle received.  There is some space between us - I am glad you appeciate the West.  From the samples of Western manhood here that I meet each day I should say that it would never suit me.  What a lot of roughs - I appreciate the greatness of the west but am disappointed by the coarseness of its representatives here.

I had a fine dinner at Madames' (Leque).  Daniels and I were entertained by the Irish wit of two pretty swell maids of Erin.  But otherwise my Xmas was like a common day for I worked until dark.

My model this week was an old man.  I have finished his head and can truly say I never painted better.  The old man is a great study.  He has seen
