London, June 28th, 1904.

Dear Father,

During this last month you have neglected my letters which I wish you would re-read and answer as soon as possible. I quote from you letter of may 1st, "The fundamental trouble regarding a livelihood in painting, seems to be there is an over supply of artists and the chances of success seems to grow less each year, while the market for pictures does not grow larger. I think that it can be safely said that art cannot be made to pay, and considered as a means of existence it offers practically no opportunity".--- that view is certainly correct. It was on account of arriving at a similar conclusion of April 10th before receiving yuor letter,that I wrote you suggesting that you let me remain in London another year in order to get a picture in the Academy in 1 1905. but as I wrote you then, my methods should be entirely different;
My connections here which I propose to continually extend, furnish me w with facilities for interesting people in your securities, what I ask you to do is , if you will to send me regularly your bond list, with particulars; I should remain here and work to place them in various quarters , such as Privateinvestors, Insurance co.'s and so forth. when any thing of importance in size should come along , you would find me valuable in helping you to place what you had to offer here.
I wish you to understand that after Aug. 10th next, my allowance is to be considered as a loan, at a certain rate of interest. I am anxious in the next few years to repay you also the money you have spent on my education, , It would give me satisfaction to see that sum divided between my two sisters. I am sure if you will back me in this, that I can make a position for myself. Saturdays and other off moments will take care of my painting and if I have some success in business my work in that time will be all the more appreciated ! Please send me my allowance as usual and something extra as my rent ( for this Quarter) is due.
Your last letter of May 30th was a kindly thoughtful one and much
appreciated by me.

With love -
William
