My dear Mother,
    
I called on Sargent. It was growing dark. He lighted up the studio and showed me his work. Some new portraits already started. In three weeks from date I am to take up my work, to show him. He is a kind man, awfully good to students. Wednesday night I am to dine with the Pritchards, and Saturday with the Norton's.
    
The weather here has been very dark. Last week I called on Mrs. Chamberlain. While there a Mrs. Fairbanks was introduced to the company. Very funny for in New York we lived in the same boarding house. Then her name was Mrs. Rowend. She seemed somewhat disconcerted on meeting me again. Take care you do not get the grip.
