Only a few weeks ago Lord Roberts entered the city over the same rout [[route]]. The difference between these two occasions must strike all. Roberts [[Robert's]] return was most gay. Londoners feeling it marked the end of the war. The long procession that will follow the gun carriage will be the saddest sight that I have witnessed. Stock business here is dead, nothing bright ahead -

Arthur Tooth is still in Rome.

My portrait of Mrs. C's sister ought to be finished Wednesday. It is looking rather painter-like. And I am devoting all my time to it.

Dear Mother I wish about every month you would tell me how you and the family are - Information desired in detail. My health is tip top, no pains. &c. What became of Billy? [[strikethrough]] this and [[/strikethrough]] Len Macomber wrote me saying that of [[strikethrough]] coarse [[/strikethrough]] course I knew all about it. I am expecting a letter from 'Sis.' with snap shots of you, the house &c. enclosed. Glad to hear that

Bess has some ability for playing the violin. Always thought she would, because she is anxious to succeed in that direction. I have found by experience, outside of the love one may have for music, painting, or writing, that practice is indispensable and continual digging through ten hours a day is necessary to obtain any noticeable proficiency in these directions
In her work and in mine we both have much to guard against. Both need at times some encouragement, some change of environment to inhale more fuel for the ambition. Something to rekindle the inspiration that may have become blurred or have drooped: [[strikethrough]] and [[/strikethrough]] Ambition and inspiration are necessary to the filling up of those technical chasms, which else are likely to remain forever

Transcription Notes:
Reviewer: I don't think the corrected word ex: "[[Robert's]]" need to be included, but kept it as is. And the "fuel for ambition" may look like "ambitions", but left as is as well.
