Dear Mother, 
Thursday afternoon was bright and clear, and after my interview with Sargent it seemed even brighter. Sargent is a noble, great man. He looked at my work and immediately started in to give me the greatest lesson of my life. It was an awakening. Now he told me some things that must not go further than you. He said that he was - and is not a colorist. I asked what he thought [[strike through]] of [[/strike through]] a colorist was. [[strike through]] then [[/strike through]] He said naturally that would be hard to define. The portrait of Mrs. Sears he thinks is not good. Various wonderful works in his studio he pointed out as not being successful. Then he put my works on the easel close by and I will say here my work
