Sargent scolded me for painting a background in a flat way placing objects in it in a subdued light. (Whistlers method) He thought it the wrong principle to work on, and that it would not harm or detract from the dread to paint those things in a sounder way. It was a great lesson from one of the great men. 
People think his method is simple and easy to acquire. He has many imitators, but how many can ever approach this simple painter or man. His is a wizard and I feel he dislikes teaching in fact he said I cannot teach or explain these various
