My dearest Mother. 

This is to be a birthday letter from your son who for twenty-one years has caused you some worry, but who the next twenty-one hopes to be a comfort. You dear mother it is my on ambition to in some way be worthy and repay you for your loving kindness. I hope to be able to tell you that the work in the Louvre is not utterly beyond me. Hurrah I am going there for the first time in one hour. I crossed the Channel yesterday by way of New Haven and Dieppe.
