My dear Mother:

Yesterday Uncle Arthur brought me a letter from you which I was very glad indeed to get. Last night I went to the opera & heard Samson & Delila. As the price "erhote fich" [[?]] for the occasion I and "erhote mich"[[?]] from the second to the third balcony. You have no choice of seats here being obliged to take whatever is given you, whether in the middle or on the side. Samson & Delila is not very interesting musically except the ballet music; but it was well staged with good chorus & orchestra, & more attention paid to the acting than would be the case in America.

My room and board are very satisfactory. I think the German cooking mind has been abandoned in America, for so far I find it, at least at dinner, very good. Tomorrow I go to try a German teacher. He wants 2M 25pf [[2 marks 25 pfennig]] a lesson which seems to me high. But he can speak English, and also knows the meaning of philosophical terms, so I shall probably try him for a month, three times a week.
