Yesterday I went to the Sachepche {[Sächsische]] Schweiz. I ought to have had ten days for this, and had so planned but during the last of the week the weather has been rainy. The card sent gives but a faint idea of how the rocks are piled up layer upon layer (or rather eaten away) in fantastic shapes. In this trip I crossed into Austria, at Herren Melchen, where the town is between high hills in a valley so narrow that only a narrow stream, road, and this row of homes can find room in it. Here I should have taken a two hour walk to a natural stone bridge; but did not have the time. Perhaps I can do this in Oct. if I return to Dresden for two or three days. 

I think I get more pleasure out of these excursions than in the picture galleries. There one can learn much, but only by severe study & hard work. It usually tires me more to stand looking at pictures half a day than to walk the whole day. The Sistine Madonna still
