My dear Mother - 

This afternoon I have just said good-bye to John Andrews. He is looking well, and has spent a number of days in all the great cities on this side. I forwarded a pretty handkerchief to Bess and much love to all, which he will shortly present. 

Friday morning Andrews and his chum Bond called first on me we fenced in the garden. John enjoyed fencing with my friend of the school Marnceau [[Monceau?]], a large [[strikethrough]] le [[/strikethrough]] officer of the French army. He will tell you all about it - Saturday I took dinner with his party. He is looking finely - I did not know him, but, he at once recognized me.
