Luzern, Aug. 24th
My dear Mother,
I write Saturday instead of Sunday because tomorrow morning I expect to make a start on my walk from Goschenen, on the St. Gotthard R.R., thru the Furka Pass to Meiringen, a distance of around 50 miles, which we expect to walk in ten days.

Last Monday I left Munich & made a long days journey, by rail to Lindau, boat to Schafthausen, & rail to Zurich. The journey to Lindau had fine mountain scenery only a part of the way. By boat to Constance was nice, but not better than many American lakes. The most interesting part of the journey was on the narrow part of the lake, & the beginning of the Rhine from Constance to Schafthausen.

[My pen has been packed & checked to Interlaken with my other baggage at this point.]

Here there were many fine villas close to the water, & many old towns also close on a level with the lake, & now & then a castle or ruin.

We did not stay over night at Schaft-hausen; but took a cab; I thought the
