There are about a dozen very interesting castles on the Rhine, but the river itself and the hills on the bank are not very fine, not as fine as the Elbe near Dresden, or as the upper Rhine from Konstanz to Schafthausen. The young German doctor who told me that the only way to become enthusiastic over the Rhine was to drink plenty & perhaps more than plenty of wine while sailing on the river, was quite right.
