Routine Work.

The routine work for this month has consisted mainly in the sorting of the Gulf of Mexico collections brought in by the Fish Commission steamer Albatross, which arrived on the 6th. The extent and general character of these collections have been already referred to. The work of sorting was a laborious one, and at the close of the month had been nearly completed. No attempt was made to sort as to species, but the specimens of each group from each haul brought together, and in this manner they will be catalogued. The sorting was mainly done by Mr. Baldwin, assisted to some extent by Miss Rathbun.

Some routine work on the collections was also done by the Curator in connection with the identifications mentioned below. He also finished correcting proof of Annual Report for 1883, and spent some time on the
