LA JOLLA: CALIFORNIA SPACE INSTITUTE
DIRECTOR'S OFFICE, 0221

TO: Richard Atkinson, Chancellor

Director, California Space Institute
SUBJECT: Space for KIDSAT Project

This memo is to document our request for additional space in order to accommodate the early stage of the KIDSAT project at UCSD.

As we discussed, our immediate KIDSAT space requirements are for 2 additional computer labs, each about the size of our current lab in the Chemistry Research Building (approximately 1100 sq. ft.), and 1 medium-size office. One of the labs will be used (by students, TEP students and interns, and local San Diego Unified School District teachers) for curriculum development; the other lab will develop into a prototype Mission Control Center. The office will house the computer support staff (1 staff member and 2 students).

We will need the facilities in the Fall, when we expect TEP interns and San Diego teachers to begin curriculum work and receipt of the (NASA provided) mission operation computers and software necessary to begin development of mission control.

I have included a one-page description of the KIDSAT project. If necessary, I would be happy to discuss the project or our requirements in more detail.
