RE: KidSat Status Report

Date: Week ending 6 Jan 95 - heading back to San Diego.

Summary:
We need to fill out Form #1628 "Request for Flight Assignment" immediately. It is 2 months late and KidSat will not be manifested without it. Someone else is also requesting use of an ESC on STS-76. Phyllis Grounds "can not buy in" to the idea of autonomous control of the ESC because it is too far advanced for their group. She acknowledges a mindset problem, but is willing to provide supporting documents such as malfunction procedures and some software (vaporware). The KidSat downlink is well defined, the uplink depends on the PIM, FAO, etc. which depend on Form #1628. The ISP (Information Sharing Protocol) looks very good for KidSat's needs, cost is about $500, maintained by LORAL at JSC with outbound connection to the internet.

Contacts:
We have met with the primary functional groups needed by KitSat at JSC: MOD, ESC, KCA, Front End, ISP, the PIM, and various COTS vendors (DEC, LORAL, Rockwell, Unysis). The working relationships have been cordially established and the KidSat concept has met with universal enthusiasm. Special thanks to Steve Gonzales for an excellent job of coordinating our time here. Professional and gracious.

Payload Integration Manager (PIM):
Met with KidSat Payload Integration Manager (PIM), Sharon Castle. We have to get form #1628 "Request for Flight Assignment" into the NASA paperwork stream ASAP. According to Sharon, this should have been done 2 months ago. Cargo Integration Review is scheduled for May 95. Also, someone else may be competing for that resource and/or Thinkpads.

STS-76 has 2 major Payload Integration Plans (PIPs), one for MIR (spacehab) and the other for Space and Life Sciences. KidSat would be part of the latter, which Sharon said is relatively small at the time. She will hold three safety review meetings (Identify, Control Plan, Verify) which will need [[circled]]CalSpace[[/circled]] personnel in attendance.
