The sediment plumes from the subsiding Mississippi River Delta are visible in this near vertical view taken October, 1985. Periodic monitoring of this region will permit accurate mapping of the decline of the delta. (61A-42-051)

The Atchafalaya River (1) parallels the Mississippi River in southern Louisiana. The extensive sediment plume is an indicator of the increasing role of this river in the Mississippi drainage system.
