Atlas Pg. 11,12

Yucatan
•This region is of particular interest because of accelerating deforestation, especially along the Belize and Guatemalan borders. Recently, timber downed by Hurricane Gilbert in 1988 burned widely along the east coast of the Peninsula, creating large new areas of cleared land. Changes in this area continue, and Space Shuttle photography provides solid data with which to monitor them.

Observation Techniques: Because of the large area and diverse interests in the region, all kinds of photography are important. However, near-vertical swath coverage using the 250 mm lens, and CIR photography over regions of deforestation and changing landuse are the most universally desired photographic products.

Volcanic plumes are best photographed obliquely; near vertical shots for details of summit areas, lava flows, landslides, cleared areas.
