Volcan de Colima (1) and Nevado de Colima (2) are located in the northwest corner of the site. Volcan de Colima is a strato-volcano with a summit lava dome. Since the beginning of this century, at least 13 significant eruptive episodes have been recorded, the last occurring in 1983. Note the small plume of steam venting from the summit in January 1986. The strato-volcano Popocatepetl (1), which erupted last in 1943, overlooks Mexico City (2). The western flank appears to be breached. The other two volcanoes in the chain are not active. The slops of Iztaccihuatl (3) are being eroded and the northern volcano (4) has undergone considerable erosion. (S19-36-102)

La Malinche (1) is an inactive volcano located east of Popocatepetl. Small cinder cones (2) are visible on the northern flank. The forests on the mountain slopes are being cut (3) and thus increasing the potential for extensive soil erosion. (51B-34-078)
