El Salvador Volcanoes

This series of overlapping photos shows the string of volcanoes along the southwestern coast of El Salvador. The city of San
Salvador (1) is situated between two volcanic features. The rim of an old caldera (2) encircles the present strato-volcanic cone
of San Salvador (3), which erupted in the early 1900's. Lake Ilopango (4) lies within the caldera (5) of a collapsed volcano.
A severely eroded volcano (6) is visible north of the city. The fertile volcanic soils are important in El Salvador's agricultural economy(7). Another lake, Lake Coatepeque (8) also lies within the caldera (5) of a collapsed volcano. Santa Ana Volcano is just off the picture to the left. Part of the lava flows from this volcano can be seen just to the left of Lake Coatepeque.
