Western Coast of Nicaragua

This is a photomosaic taken in color infrared of the western coast of Nicaragua, from the Gulf of Fonseca (1) to Lake Managua (2) and Masaya volcano (3). The city of Managua is at (4). The color infrared highlights the vegetation differences of this region, especially those on the slopes of the zone of volcanoes between the Gulf of Fonseca and Lake Managua. Active summit areas are grey-they support no vegetation, probably because of acid fumes venting from the summit. Dark black flows from the summits of a few peaks indicate that the volcanic activity was quite recent-vegetation regrowth has yet to occur on the new flows. Dark red areas are the forested slopes. The northernmost volcano with a summit caldera at the mouth of Fonseca is Coseguina, which last erupted explosively in 1835. Mangrove swamps rim part of the Gulf of Fonseca, but the intricate pattern established in the southern part of the bay is marine aquaculture. (STS034-88-005 through 008)
