Yucatán Peninsula

This low oblique photograph provides an excellent view of the Yucatán Peninsula. The coral reefs offshore are evident, as well as sedimentation in the coastal bays.


Merida, Yucatán
STS51A-36-069

Merida, Yucatán is the city situated in the center of this photograph. A road connects it to the coastal town of Progreso, which is thought to be the center of the Chicxulub Impact Crater. Agricultural pattern are clearly visible in this region. Wave action has increased the near-shore sedimentation load.
