The Andes Altiplano

This low-oblique, west-looking view shows a portion of the Altiplano (high plains) in the central Andes. The region is south of Lake Titicaca. This spectacular view shows a number of large strato-type volcanoes, including Acotango (1), Parinacoto (2), Anallajsi (3), and Sajama (4). Lake of the Hungry (5) is also visible in this view. Lava, ash, and mudflows cover the area. Most of these volcanic eruptions occurred during the early building of the Andes Mountains. The photograph, taken in low sun, allows scientists a splendid view of the subtle relief of the terrain in the region.

Lake Coipasa

This spectacular south-looking view shows the western end of Lake Coipasa in the central Andes Altiplano (high plains). The Carabaya Hills (1) can be seen just north of the lake. Old volcanoes can be seen scattered throughout the scene, including one in the lake. Numerous small villages are located to the north of the lake. The village people, descendants of the Incas who once inhabited this region of the Andes, are involved in mining. The elevation of the Altiplano in this region exceeds 3900 meters (12 800 ft).
