Al Masirah, Oman

The V-shaped wakes (1) off Al Masirah island, Oman were made by ships travelling at high speed on a rather calm sea. The sun glint shows a series of very complex sea surface patterns. (STS41G-35-72)

Socotra, Somalia

This image of an island wake (1) off Socotra Island was photographed in April 1983, near the end of the northeast monsoon season. The wake was likely formed when the anticyclonic circulation pattern had curled north around the island. (STS006-s40-758)

Ocean Front, Indian Ocean

This image of a broken linear loud pattern indicates an oceanic front. It was photographed in February 1984 during the middle of the northeast monsoon season, approximately 375 km off the coast of Kenya. The front was likely caused by a branch from the North Indian Ocean Current (moving east to west) curling and traveling south off the African coast.
