Chlorophyll Distribution, Equatorial Pacific Plant pigment distributions in the Equatorial Pacific, derived from data collected by NASA's Coastal Zone Color Scanner, reveals nutrient-rich water (light blue) upwelling along the equator. Purple areas north and south of the equator indicate low concentrations of plant pigments while yellow and red colors along the coasts of Central and South America indicate high concentrations of plant pigments associated with coastal upwelling.
