Charleston, South Carolina Charleston sits between the junction of the Ashley (1) and Cooper (2) rivers as they empty into the Atlantic Ocean. South Carolina's coastal plain is still heavily forested (evidenced by the dark red color on the infrared photograph), although coastal development is increasing. The foodplains of the rivers are dark, suggesting little green vegetation in the inundated areas surrounding the river channels. The color visible view shows a wider field -- the barrier islands, intercoastal waterways and lagunal swamps are typical of the Carolina coast. (STS073-729-038) (color) and (STS073-750-032) (color infrared).
