The Lualaba River Region

The city of Kibombo (1) is located just west of the Lualaba River (2). Apparently this is a transition zone --forest to grassland (3). There is evidence of deforestation (4) in the northern part of the scene. (S23-43-090)

The Zaire River

The Ubangui River (1) meanders among islands to joing the braided channel of the Zaire River (2). Many of the islands may be totally submerged during seasonal flooding. Braided streams generally carry a heavy sediment load and have easily eroded banks which allow the river to widen. Note the difference in sediment load in the river channels (3). Much of the area is swampland. (S23-43-077)
