Simpson Desert, Warburton River

The sandy surfaces of the Simpson Desert reflects the various ages of the sedimentary mantle. The youngest deposits are buff-colored evaporites, such as gypsum. The sand ridges are covered by grassland vegetation and appear light orange. The dark red areas are ancient residual outcrops of calcrete, an oxidized concretion similar in composition to caliche. The Warbuton River (1) flows into Goyden Lagoon (2). (S08501870)
