North Island, Nero Island

This view to the west shows New Zealand's largest volcanoes, including the circular Mt. Egmont (1), Lake Taupo (2) and Ruapehu (3). Ruapehu erupted in November 1995. The hot volcanic material melted the snow cap and produced large flows down the mountain. (STS056-98-081)

Mt. Egmont, North Island

This large volcano, last active 250-400 years ago, is well defined by a circular fence enclosing a national park on the volcano. (STS009-40-2574)
