Southern Cascades; Mount Shasta

The isolated, snow covered peak of Mt. Shasta is centered on this photograph. The surrounding mountains are the Klamath Mountains; Crescent City, California can be seen at (1). Another of the Cascade volcanoes, Lassen Peak, (2) which last erupted in 1914, is at the extreme right center of the view. This volcano is considered to be the southern end of the Cascades. The wide area on the upper portion of the view is the Great Basin.

Mount Shasta Volcano, California

The twin peaks of Mount Shasta and Shastina, an inactive volcano in the Southern Cascade Range is seen in this near vertical view taken in Octobeer[[October]], 1986. With an elevation of over 4,300 meters, Mount Shasta has not errupted[[erupted]] in historic times. However, hot sulfuric springs occur near the summit. Lava flows and ash deposits from eruptions that occurred thousands of years ago flow outward on all sides at the base of the volcano. Snow covers the upper elevations of the mountain throughout the year.
