Crater Lake, Oregon
These two views of Crater Lake were taken in April, 1985. The top view, looking south, shows Klamath Lake (1), Diamond Lake (2), and Mount McLoughlin (3). Crater Lake lies in a high pit that was created when the top of a prehistoric volcano (Mt. Mazama) was blown off by a violent eruption. The second deepest lake (590 meters) in North America, Crater Lake is nearly 10km wide, lies 1,880 meters above sea level, and is surrounded by cliffs that are from 152 to 610 meters high. Having no inlet or outlet, the lake was formed and is maintained by rain and snowfall. Wizard Island is a cinder cone 237 meters high near the lake's western shore.
