Great Salt Lake, February 1990

Two views of the Great Salt Lake photographed in February 1990 are shown. The top photograph gives an overall view of the lake, the Great Salt Desert, and the surrounding mountains. Salt Lake City is at (1). The bottom photograph gives a more detailed view of the lake and the standing water (2) now located in the salt desert. Compare this scene with the STS-51B photograph. The lake level has risen dramatically since 1985. However, precipitation (until the 1992-1993 winter) was normal to slightly below normal, and lake levels receded. The color difference across the lake is due to a large railroad causeway which traverses the lake and acts as a barrier, separating the deeper waters of the southern half of the lake from the shallow waters to the north. Biological material highlights small gyres in the lake. (STS036-81-054, STS036-151-043)
