ACCESSING WEATHER IMAGES THROUGH THE WEB

Students and teachers are now able to access weather satellite photos on the web. Most of the weather pages are maintained by NOAA and/or by universities with strong meteorology departments (meteorology is the study of the weather). For example, the GOES 8 images which show clouds over North America, are available through several web sites. A new image is available every half-hour, and you are able to see these images within ten minutes of the time that the satellite took the picture! This immediacy helps to create the excitement of using such images in the classroom.

There are so many web pages with weather information, that it is easy to get overwhelmed. KidSat has tried to make them accessible through one page:

http://www.kidsat.ucsd.edu/kidsat/clouds/weather/weather.html

This page has links to several sites that display weather maps and satellite images, including the Weather Channel's web site, the USA Today weather site, MSNBC's weather site, and several others. Even with this one page to start from, you will have to do some clicking to get to the satellite images you want. As you become familiar with these sites, you may want to create your own Netscape "Bookmarks" to take you directly to particular pages.
