Targeting Area (four students worked great)

This is where it all starts! Students would find an area (using the slider map), fill out information on a half sheet of paper (orbit number, descending node, longitude of day and night), attach it to a "Photo Entry Form" (to be filled out by other areas- every area has a place to fill out on the sheet, except for NASA TV), and attach it to the clip board. They would then mark the selected point on two small maps.

1. One map would then be taken to the Weather Area to check the area.

2. The second map would go to the Reference Area and they would tell the targetters what was there (i.e. river, volcano, mountain range, biomes...).

3. The clip board would be passed to the Lat/Lon Area and students would check the site on a second slider map. This may have been the source of some errors, and may be an unnecessary step. With a smaller class, it may be best to only have one slider map (less room for mistakes).

From here, the information would then be passed on to the Reference Area, where students would use a dictionary and proofread the information.

As a group, the targetters would complete the task of checking one site. Once each student completed their "task," they would come back as a group and choose the next target (they would have to finish with one clip board, before they could move on to the next one).

Two clip boards circulated the classroom at a time. There were two SMOC Directors who were responsible for each clip board and making sure it kept moving from area to area.

Weather Station (used three students, recommend one to two; two computers with internet connection)

1. One to two students used a computer to check the web for weather. They kept an up to date map showing the weather.

2. Volcano Area (one student). This area worked with the targetters to know which areas the shuttle would be passing over. They would then check the web to see if there were any volcanoes in those areas.
