Overview of lesson material

The Teacher's Guide that you will receive contains information, material, and activities designed to help you prepare your students to participate in the shuttle mission, and to incorporate the KidSat images in your curriculum. Here we provide a brief overview of the lessons.

Because we don't have control over the Shuttle's launch schedule, sometimes the KidSat launch occurs at the beginning of the school year (not what we would have picked... but better than in the middle of the summer!). That is the case for STS-86. This means that you will not have much time to prepare your students. For this reason, we thought it was important to let you know what parts of the materials we consider "essential". Several of the chapters contain information that might be of interest, but can be skipped without compromising the students' ability to successfully select, target, request, and download pictures.

On the pages that follow, we provide a brief description of each chapter, and a list of the essential points. These pages are also the first pages of each chapter in the Teachers' Guide.

There are two important web sites used for KidSat, which you may want to begin exploring:

KidSat Homepage http://www.kidsat.ucsd.edu/kidsat

This contains information about KidSat, and the SMOC Web pages used during the flight for selecting and submitting photos. The "SMOC" portion of these pages are password protected. You will be receiving your login and password under separate cover. When you receive them, write them here:

KidSat Data System http://kidsat.jpl.nasa.gov/kidsat/datasys

From here, you can view images taken on the previous KidSat flights. This is also where you will view your images after they have been taken. This site is password protected, but all users use the same login and password:
