Helpful Hints from Previous KidSat Teachers

Use those lesson plans! Start form the beginning and work to the end. Use the lessons as they are. The "Guide to Looking at Images" is excellent for teaching remote sensing. Work through the lesson plans. Learning about the margin of error for the camera selecting targets, is the most important.

It's amazing! The kids really teach themselves. Read through the material and be familiar with it. Go with it. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

Have detailed plans of the SMOC (i.e. hours, shifts, who is doing what...). Dive into it. Give it all it's worth.

It is overwhelming as first. Stick with it, it comes together. The first simulation is helpful.

If you are doing after school, figure out transportation, food, talk to the parents and the school.

Read the information during the summer, and play with the computers. Get telephone numbers, and email addresses of those who have previously been involved. There are so many ways to do it, do what suits you.

Make sure to go over everything. The background information helps the kids to have a better idea whats going on, it is easier to do the mission. Prioritize.

Get on the computer as soon as possible. Be familiar with the KidSat website as soon as possible.

Don't panic. You may think you are not ready, but it evolves. Learn along the way. You learn with the kids, and they teach you.

Work the students on organization and job responsibilities. Practice.

Be very flexible! Get practice in the operation of the SMOC before you try and have the kids do it.

Next time, I would like to involve cross-grades to help in the training. We used 8th graders for the last mission and they will [[be]] going to another school.

Make sure to have exposure to the web pages... Follow the simulations.... Go over all of the lessons.
