The Web in KidSat

The world wide web is an important tool in the KidSat program. We will be using it extensively both before and during the flight. Here are a few examples:

Before the space shuttle flight:

1. Some of the curricular materials and lessons will be available over the web. Though you will also receive "paper copies" of most, a few are specifically web-based, and others will include illustrative drawings or animations provided only on the web.

2. You may wish to access other web sites to obtain general background information and to supplement "lessons" we will provide. For example, there is a considerable amount of information about the shuttle and shuttle flights available from NASA; there are numerous examples of photographs of the earth taken from the space shuttle.

3. We will provide information on the "Mission Control Gateway" (here at UCSD) on the web, so that you'll have some insight into who you're working with, and how we're structured.

4. Before the flight in December, you will plan (in detail) the photographs you intend to take during the flight. You will need to use our "SMOC" web pages to do this (we will provide lessons on how to use these pages), and to communicate your selections to us.

5. Before the flight, we will conduct two "simulations" with the participating schools. During those simulations, you will use web pages to participate in the simulation and to communicate with us.
