The figure on the right shows the Eastern Hemisphere of the globe which covers longitudes from 0° to 180° East.

Sometimes the East and West directions are not given with the longitude values and positive values are used instead to indicate longitudes to the East of the Prime Meridian and negative values are used to indicate longitude to the West of the Prime Meridian.

The figure on the left illustrates this concept.  Notice that 180° West (-180°) and 180° East (+180°) specify the same location half-way around the world from the Prime Meridian.

Examples:

The longitude lines 120° E and 140°E pass through Australia.  20°E longitude passes through Africa.
