Discussion
Each student now has an accurate (except for size) model of the Earth. The circumference of the Earth is 25,000 miles. Have the students measure the circumference, in inches, of the tennis ball globe. To determine the map scale, the tennis balls' circumference should be set equal to 25,000 miles. Next, have the students determine how many miles equal 1 inch.

If the tennis ball has a circumference of 10 inches, then 1 inch on the tennis ball is equal to 25,000 miles.

(This may be a good place to begin a discussion on map scale. There are several map scale activities included later.)
