1.0 Abstract

EarthKAM (Earth Knowledge Acquired through Middle schools) is a NASA funded, web based program that is student managed and operated at the University of California at San Diego (UCSD), under the direction of Dr. Sally Ride. EarthKAM allows middle school students from around the world to submit requests for earth observation photographs to be taken from the Space Shuttle. These requests are coordinated at UCSD (converted from the requested latitude and longitude into the predicted time the orbiter will pass over the requested coordinates) and sent to an electronic still camera that is mounted on a fixed, hand operated bracket in the overhead window of the orbiter. After four successful shuttle missions, EarthKAM is transitioning to the International Space Station (ISS). Part of this transition as the first payload aboard the ISS requires implementation of a new camera bracket. A student team at UCSD has designed and built the electronic ground controlled camera bracket that will mount in the nadir looking window of the US Lab module. One of the potential problems with using
