Volcanoes in Mexico

STS099.ESC.03230723

20.1° North, 96.9° West

This image of the Puebla state in central Mexico features two magnificent volcanoes. In the northwestern part of the image is La Malinche, the dark volcano that you can see in its entirety. La Malinche is an eroded statovolcano consturcted during the Pleistocene. The deep canyons marking its summit give evidence to glacial erosion. La Malinche lies northeast of the city of Puebla and rises to a height of approximately 4,000 meters. Pico de Orizaba is barely visible as the snow-capped peak in the eastern portion of the image. Two smaller volcanic cones can be seen lying between the two volcanoes.
