In 1978, NASA selected a new group of astros that included 6 women. With this selection, NASA took 6 female sci + eng., & made us very visible examples of what women could achieve in those fields. => My father, for one, was particularly pleased when this happened. He was a Poli Sci teacher..., who knew nothing about science. He had a daughter w/ PhD in Physics...but had no idea what a physicist did. When I become an astronaut, he could finally describe what his daughter did for a living.

=>[More important than father being able to brag. - 10's of thousands of girls around the country suddenly saw [[crossed out]] new career options open [[/crossed out]] doors that had been closed [[crossed out]] were now [[/crossed out]] to them open.

After 1st flight, lots of people came up to me & told me their daughters now wanted to be astros
[Impact media + role models can have on kids

Share one unusual story => lots of publicity => TV's & newspapers.
Would have thought I was only 1 on flight
[Little Boy Story]
=>Now of course, there are far more women (still not enough) in sci, & there are many (still not enuf) at high levels of gov't, indust, + AC. Only way to [increase] numbers of women in sci & math is to encourage, motivate & support that interest [ inspire that spirit] in [[crossed out]] young [[/crossed out]] girls + young women.

Our society still tends to cultivate & encourage that spirit in boys more than in girls.

=> This award recognized the spirit of women in science & technology + the [[crossed out]] importance [[/crossed out]] relevance of science & math education for girls as well as boys. In giving me this award, you're signalling to young girls that they, too, can reach for the stars.
