Today, the challenge from overseas is just as real - but whereas the launch of sputnik was a single, galvanizing event (w/ banner headlines, + satellite with xmtr...) 

Today's economic challenge has been sneaking up on us, [[strikethrough]]has not yet announced itself in a single event [[strikethrough]] over the last several years, we have lost our competitive advantage in science + tech. 

other countries put far more emphasis on education
-have people who are just as smart 
-are education + training them just as well + are doing so in huge numbers building an enormous competitive advantage 

time to wake up, remember what we did in response to sputnik, + again value + emphasize sci + math ed. 

space exploration 
astonishing med advances 
response to global warming 
sol'ns [[?]] to disease + hunger 

to quote carl sagan: 
"it's suicidal to create a society dependent on sci + tech, in which no one knows anything about sci + tech."

sci + tech are the engines that drive our economy, + it really is stupid suicidal to put so little value in sci + math education.
