IV. Workshop on Research Findings in Gender Equity in Math/Science In November 1995, we organized a two-day workshop at UCSD to discuss the research findings which address "commonly held beliefs" about girls and women's participation and success in science and math. Our goal was to summarize the current state of research on the topic of gender equity in math and sciences. In addition to Sally Pride, Paula Levin, Tam O'Shaughnessy, and two student research assistants, workshop participants included: Dr. Catherine Krupnick, Harvard University (Education) Dr. Lynn Liben, Chair, Pennsylvania State University (Psychology) Dr. Marcia Linn, University of California, Berkeley (Education) Dr. Anne Peterson, Deputy Director National Science Foundation A summary of the workshop conclusions is enclosed. Brief Overview Of 1996 Objectives 1. Once we have completed transcription and consolidation of notes from the two-day workshop, we will create and circulate the workshop proceedings. 2. We plan to expand our contacts with organizations which fund or conduct programs to enhance girls' and women's interest in, achievement in and involvement in math and science learning and careers. Our goals is a complete compilation of all programs which address math and science gender equity, and initial support of promising programs. Our goals include supporting the development of materials for use in pre-service teaching training, and for in-service classroom teacher workshops on the topics of teaching practices which encourage gender equity in math and science. We plan to meet with the president of the National Science Teachers Association and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics to discuss ways to involve these national organizations in dissemination of gender equity materials to teachers of mathematics and science. 5. We plan to organize a conference to bring together researchers who study issues of gender equity, and practitioners who are currently involved in programs to support girls and women in math and science.
