it had risen to the first story of the houses in the lower street. It was not possible to get within two blocks of the place where I took the photos. Today I heard that the Pantheon is to be used to shelter people. You will probably get more detailed information when you get to New York than that I can give you. I will probably get a larger understanding of the scope of the disaster the next time I get a paper from home.

Tonight it is very cold, it seems to be more so than any time before this winter. I hope you are not cold in you berth out on the winter sea. I am sitting close to my stove which is going out, and will drive me to bed shortly.

In trying to economize tonight I cooked myself some rice with milk and raisons but for some reason beyond me when it was cooked I did not want to eat it. I think that standing over the hot fire stirring it probably took my appetite away. Tomorrow morning I shall fry the whole concoction for breakfast it ought to be very good I think.
