The bird I have gradualy come to take as the symbol of life or the mystery of life - and if you remember - his wings are partly open - one at the front and the other at the back.  The later being mostly concealed by the legs of the man.  Coming out from under the front wing I have introduced several small figures - somewhat in the atitude of "coming to life" or "morning" - And going in under the other wing -- several others (the old man with his hand before his face etc) which if you like can give the idea of the going back into the mystery or night - In this way the grand homme becomes - as it were - one of a frieze -- one of a series of figures that represent the mystery of life - Only he - to stand out in this series as the symbol of man - he has been made ten times larger than the others - Also I have placed
